From the Art Room: Dear Parents: Earth Day is coming up, and in art class, we will be making art with recyclable materials! Please send us your unwanted egg cartons, cardboard toilet paper or paper towel rolls and old CDs. We will be collecting these materials from Monday, April 4th, through Thursday, April 8th. You can send the materials with your child or bring them to the Elementary Art Room (in front of the Elementary Principal's office). Thank you in advance for your help! ATTENTION STUDENTS WHO EAT FROM THE CAFETERIA!!!Did you know that you use 180 styrofoam plates that get thrown into the trash each school year when you buy your lunch from the cafeteria? Think about how much garbage that is with ALL the students combined! OUR POOR EARTH!The Elementary Environmental Club plans to kick off a campaign this week where we encourage students to bring tupperware to the cafeteria. Dona Betty has agreed to serve students their food in their tupperware containers to avoid using styrofoam products. Each time you avoid using a styrofam plate, you will receive a ticket on recycled paper. Trade in 5 of these tickets for a special prize from Ms. Willett's 4A classroom! Disney Musical!!!
Attention parents: This year’s Elementary Musical Production is on its way!
Please read the important information attached in case your child is interested. Some things have changed so please read information very carefully.
Auditions will be held next week and any student who does not attend the audition on his/her assigned day, will not be permitted to participate in this year’s production.

Musical: Disney on Broadway!
Audition Dates: Tuesday, January 11, 2011 - 1st and 2nd grade: 2:45-4:00pm
Thursday, January 13, 2011 - 3rd grade: 2:45-4:00pm
Friday, January 14, 2011 – 4th and 5th grade: 2:45-4:00pm For Auditions:
 Auditions will take place in the Multipurpose room.
 Students should wear comfortable clothing that they can move in (P.E. shorts are perfect!).
 Each student MUST complete an audition form and bring it with them to the audition.
 This year there will be an audition committee who will be made up of 3-4 judges using rubrics to give each child a set of marks based on the performance of the child in the audition.
 Students will be given a number that they will attach to their shirt. This number will be written on the rubric and each final score will be the average of the 3-4 judges’ scores. These scores will be used in the event of too many students wishing to participate, as space available will depend on how many students from each grade level audition.
 Students who do not attend the audition on their assigned date will NOT be permitted to participate in the musical.
Rehearsals: The week of January 17th, a list will be given to homeroom teachers of which students have been chosen to participate in the musical. Rehearsals will then start the following Monday, January 24, 2011. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Mondays: 12:30-1:10 (girls’ dance ensemble – by invite only) (Location of rehearsals 2:30-4:00 (3rd Grade) to be announced) Tuesdays: 12:30-1:10 (girls’ dance ensemble – by invite only) 2:30-4:00 (1st and 2nd Grade) Wednesdays: 2:45-3:30 (Teachers) Thursdays: 12:30-1:10 (transitional actors – by invite only – starts March) 2:30-4:00 (4th and 5th Grade)
Show Dates: Wednesday, May 4th and Thursday, May 5th and Friday, May 6th
Grade Groups: Each group will practice on the assigned days as listed above. Each group will learn 2 different musical ensemble numbers to perform for the final presentation.
Girls’ Dance Ensemble: 4th and 5th grade by invitation from the director only. This group will perform one or two numbers for the final performance, which will require a slightly higher level of dance skills, and an extra commitment to additional performances.
Transitional Actors: 3rd, 4th and 5th grade by invitation from the director only. This group will perform short transitional readings or scenes, which will require good presence on stage and a clear, loud voice.
Costumes: Costumes will be designed by Ms. Willett and a seamstress. It will be the parents’ commitment to pay for their child’s costumes for both of the numbers they will be performing in.
Commitment: Any student who chooses to participate in the musical must make a solid commitment to the musical. If there are rehearsals that interfere with other clubs or sports, then the student must make a decision between the two. Students may only participate in both if the practices are on different days. They will NOT be excused from musical rehearsal for a sports tournament or any other commitment. If your child chooses to participate in both sports and the musical, it will be the responsibility of the family to organize and co-ordinate the schedules. The school will not be responsible for changing games or rehearsals so that your child can do both.
Ticket Sales: It will be the responsibility of each participant to sell a number of tickets (in a set package) for the show. This is used as a fundraiser to help pay for needs of the musical, such as lighting and sound.

EMPTY BOWLS PRE-SALE
Dear Parents: Your children have worked very hard on their bowls for the Empty Bowls event this year, and I think you will be pleased with the results! If you would like to reserve your child's bowl (so that no one else buys it) you will be allowed to do so by sending L.150 to me or Ms. Gomez, the art assistant, by this friday, December 3rd. As another holiday season nears, many of us will enjoy our time with loved ones and celebrate the joyous memories of the past year. As we give thanks for the blessings and gifts in our lives, we also have an opportunity to appreciate those people who make the American School outstanding, but who rarely get the recognition they deserve.

On behalf of all American Schools students, we would like to extend our gratitude to the maintenance workers, the bus drivers, the nannies and their families by preparing food baskets for them as gifts at Christmas. Students in each grade level are asked to contribute the following items:

Al aproximarse otra época de Navidad, muchos de nosotros disfrutaremos con nuestros seres queridos y celebraremos los felices recuerdos del año pasado. Al dar gracias por todas las bendiciones y regalos en nuestras vidas, también tenemos la oportunidad de agradecer a las personas que en la Escuela Americana sobresalen, pero que rara vez se les da el reconocimiento que se merecen.
